When considering braces, adult patients often question whether they may be “too old” to start their treatment. The general consensus may be that braces are for children, but the truth is that you’re never too old to start treatment. At Sprayberry Orthodontics, we have a variety of treatment options for adults looking for a straighter, healthier smile.
Why Should I Start Treatment?
Misalignments or gaps in the teeth can be a source of discomfort, sometimes lowering self-esteem or making people feel self-conscious about their smiles. Though braces may seem like a big commitment, a change in your smile can often make a world of difference in both your self-confidence and your oral health.

How Long Does Treatment Take?
As we age, our jawbone begins to set around our teeth, creating a more permanent smile. This is the reason why many orthodontic patients are children. Children and young adults are at a prime age for correcting misalignments because their jaw bones have not yet set around their teeth.
But, what does that mean for adults? To put it simply, because the jaw bone is less malleable, treatment times are expected to be longer for adult patients than for younger patients. But, don’t let these longer treatment times deter you! For a professional estimate of how long your treatment with braces will take, contact Sprayberry Orthodontics.
Your Treatment Options:
Once you’ve decided to move forward with braces, it’s time to talk about your options. There are three main types of adult braces: metal braces, clear braces, and Invisalign:
Metal braces come at an affordable cost and are perfect for patients who aren’t as concerned with the look of their braces. These braces have stood the test of time for a reason: they work!
Similar to the metal braces, clear braces are not removable and are affixed to the patient’s teeth. These braces have a more subtle look than traditional metal braces and use a ceramic bracket system that blends in well with the teeth.
Invisalign is a modern alternative to traditional metal or clear braces. Invisalign consists of simple, removable plastic aligners that a patient wears throughout the day and night. Invisalign is a discreet option, great for patients who do not like the look of traditional braces.
Living With Braces
Living with your new braces is different, not difficult. During treatment, there will need to be some necessary changes to your food intake and oral hygiene habits. Don’t worry! These changes are simple to understand and execute throughout your treatment duration.
With traditional metal braces, there are some foods that will be “off-limits” for the length of your treatment. This may take some getting used to as your diet and routines will need to change. For more information, check out Sprayberry’s list of foods to avoid with braces.
Invisalign clear aligners are a little different than metal or clear braces. With Invisalign, there are no food restrictions because the trays are removable for meal times. Simply remove the aligners to eat, brush both your teeth and your aligner, and pop it back into your mouth.
